‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ to open November 2021

Warner Bros. Pictures has announced the release date for the third “Fantastic Beasts” film—inviting audiences to return to the cinematic Wizarding World on November 12, 2021. The release date marks the opening of the next installment of one of the Studio’s key properties.  The announcement was made today by Ron Sanders, President, Worldwide Theatrical Distribution and Home Entertainment.

Bailey finds new destiny in sequel ‘A Dog’s Journey’

In Universal Pictures’ new inspiring drama A Dog’s Journey, the sequel to the heartwarming global hit A Dog’s Purpose, beloved dog Bailey finds his new destiny and forms an unbreakable bond that will lead him, and the people he loves, to places they never imagined.

“The first movie was about our dog going from person to person to get back to Ethan,” states producer Gavin Polone. “But with this movie, our dog is on a mission to protect one person: a girl who becomes a woman. Of course, the dynamics of issues with young girls and their mothers is a different perspective.”

Because of that, the idea of recruiting a female filmmaker—in particular one who had a great deal of experience with comedy—became Polone’s focus. “I had worked with Gail Mancuso on Gilmore Girls, and there are things tonally and comedically that are reminiscent of that show with this movie,” he says.

“I loved the first movie and when the opportunity arose for me to direct this one it was a blessing,” says Mancuso. “I have five dogs myself and truly love animals.”

The director feels that A Dog’s Journey author W. Bruce Cameron’s approach to storytelling is refreshing in its honesty. “Bruce is such a talented writer, and he definitely strikes a harmonious chord between the dog’s point of view and the human one,” Mancuso says. “Mixing that together so elegantly is such a talent.”

As a fan of the first film, the director wanted to continue to respect the audience’s connection to Bailey—and by proxy their own pets—in the new chapter. “In our movie, it’s not as if the dog’s mouth moves or he speaks; you hear the thoughts. If you are a dog lover, you tend to talk to your dogs and like to answer back for them. Some dogs are so human that you hope their thoughts are in congress to what you’re thinking.”

Even though Bailey makes it his mission to honor the wishes of his boy, as he grows attached to the latter’s granddaughter CJ, he further expands his understanding of what it is to be human. That spoke to the filmmaker. “This story is a bit more female-centric than the first movie,” says Mancuso. “I was drawn to it because of CJ’s character. As we follow one human all the way through—as well as the dogs that accompany her on her journey—that is a thread that keeps the movie together. I’m a mother and felt that I could bring a lot to the movie in terms of raising kids and being a woman.”

In Philippine cinemas May 15, A Dog’s Journey is distributed in the Philippines by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures. #ADogsJourney

About A Dog’s Journey

Some friendships transcend lifetimes. In A Dog’s Journey, the sequel to the heartwarming global hit A Dog’s Purpose, beloved dog Bailey finds his new destiny and forms an unbreakable bond that will lead him, and the people he loves, to places they never imagined.

Bailey (voiced again by Josh Gad) is living the good life on the Michigan farm of his “boy,” Ethan (Dennis Quaid) and Ethan’s wife Hannah (Marg Helgenberger). He even has a new playmate: Ethan and Hannah’s baby granddaughter, CJ. The problem is that CJ’s mom, Gloria (Betty Gilpin), decides to take CJ away. As Bailey’s soul prepares to leave this life for a new one, he makes a promise to Ethan to find CJ and protect her at any cost.

Thus begins Bailey’s adventure through multiple lives filled with love, friendship and devotion as he, CJ (Kathryn Prescott), and CJ’s best friend Trent (Henry Lau) experience joy and heartbreak, music and laughter, and few really good belly rubs.

Directed by Emmy winner Gail Mancuso (TV’s Modern Family), A Dog’s Journey is produced by Gavin Polone (A Dog’s Purpose), and written by W. Bruce Cameron & Cathryn Michon, and Maya Forbes & Wally Wolodarsky, based on the best-selling novel by Cameron.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ (spoiler-free) review: Marvel’s gratifying finale

‘Avengers: Endgame’ brings pride and joy to the fans who have invested in the MCU franchise, 11 years and 21 movies ago.

After the “snappening” in Infinity War, audiences, myself included, are left with our jaws on the floor as the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin) wipes half of the living creatures in the universe. It’s a superhero film where the supervillain wins at the end – it’s far from the crowd-pleasing ending expected, yet it’s something fresh that we can definitely dig. Serving as the culmination to Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 3, Avengers: Endgame assembles the surviving heroes one last time to avenge the fallen. The trailers, however, drop very minimal hints. What’s exactly going on in this solid 3-hour film? Are the ‘vanished’ really dead or are they just inside the soul stone? Will time travel through quantum realm be the means to undo their demise? I can neither confirm nor deny these fan speculations in this discussion. One thing I can guarantee for sure, this groundbreaking film exceeds the hype. It even retroactively deepens our love for the previous films. If this isn’t perfection, then I can’t even imagine how to make a more gratifying version than this.

The gang is back. (Half of them anyway). Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Paul Rudd and Scarlett Johansson in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

Whereas the main attraction of Infinity War is its earned fan service spectacle, Endgame surprises as the most emotional and most contemplative MCU film to date. There’s plenty of fuel here – loss, grief and guilt are the prime ones to motivate our core six Avengers. Y’all should know them by now but since this will be their swan songs, I’d mention them anyway. There’s genius inventor Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), super-soldier Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans), rage monster Bruce Banner/Hulk, god of thunder Thor (Chris Hemsworth), deadly assassin Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and a vengeful marksman Clint Barton/Hawkeye returning from his absence in Infinity War. Rounding up the troop are Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Rhodey/War Machine (Don Cheadle), Rocket Racoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Nebula (Karen Gillan), and newly-minted Avenger, Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely once again deserve high merits for successfully juggling an overwhelming amount of characters, with the OG crew getting the lion’s share of show-stopping moments.

Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) drifts into space.

The character and ensemble work is better than expected, with every A-lister bringing their A-games to the table. Downey’s subdued grief and reliable cocky screen presence supplies much melancholy and joy. Evans finally gets to play with Cap’s lifetime of regrets from being frozen in ice several years ago. Ruffalo sells both the neurotic scientist and the rampaging Hulk. Hemsworth feels loose and natural as a self-deprecating comic god. Johansson lends an unexpected emotional weight to the film and Renner has so much soulfulness in his eyes. What most trailers don’t show is how much time is devoted to make these characters appeal as more than a team, but rather as each other’s adopted family. By this point, most of us see them as friends. We worry for their safety. We heavily root for them. Genuine emotional connection is the magic that MCU has built all these years.

“Even if there’s a small chance we can undo this, we owe it to everyone that’s not in this room to try.” – Black Widow

Endgame also serves as a testament to the majestic directorial skills of the Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, in tying up a decade’s worth of storytelling into a poignant and hair-raising climax. The film bears plenty of callbacks from its franchise’s earliest entries, along with a top-notch cinematography and even the frenetic quality of the comic books. It’s emotionally-overwhelming and that’s because Endgame is a layered film at its best. It’s an epic superhero spectacle, an inventive heist, a dramatic tale of courage and loss, and most of all, an exploration of what it means to be a family and a hero. The hearty takeaway is this: heroism is not defined by superhero abilities, but by what one is willing to sacrifice for the greater good.

Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) joins the Avengers in ‘Endgame.’

It’s true that Endgame will have a much deeper impact for the diehard fans. With its sense of finality pervading throughout, the film takes its viewers to a roller-coaster of emotions: I was gasping, laughing, crying and cheering (sometimes all at the same time). Its tragic yet uplifting. To say that Marvel has outdone themselves with their carefully crafted emotional beats, thrilling action sequences and heartbreaking farewells, is an understatement. No other movie franchise has done this feat in Hollywood history.

“Let’s go get this son of a b—–.” – Steve Rogers

MCU caps off an era by being more than just 11 years of entertainment. This is the cinematic superhero journey of a generation. Part of that journey is the end but with each ending comes a new beginning. The past is golden and the future looks bright. I give my heartfelt gratitude to all the characters and to all the true and unsung heroes of Marvel.

Paramount Pictures collabs with UP grad for ‘Pet Sematary’ alternative poster

In celebration of the release of its upcoming suspense thriller Pet Sematary, Paramount Pictures has collaborated with a Caloocan-based Filipino artist via Talenthouse (a leading online open-source creative platform), to create the film’s alternative poster for the Philippines.

The Pet Sematary tribute poster was done by Don Suratos, 39, a graduate from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, and now working as a successful freelance illustrator. His illustration may be used for the film’s marketing campaign.

Suratos, 39, was specifically recruited by Paramount  based on his impressive body of work in Talenthouse. “I used to join Talenthouse competitions, but I eventually got really busy with commissioned book illustrations, so I stopped joining,” Suratos shares. “Then, out of the blue, I received an email that I was personally selected by Paramount Pictures thru Talenthouse to create an artwork for them.”

The Malabon-born illustrator then set out his preparation by watching the trailers of the 2019 film,  and Googling official production stills. His main goal was to “make the elements simple and highlight the girl looking back, the graveyard and the cat’s eyes as my main elements,” Suratos reveals.

“I kept the layout and the concept simple. I focused on the rendering,” he continues. “I feel my scribble rendering style gave my poster a creepier feel than usual. I love the chaos of scribbles. I feel the rendering style complimented the mood of the film.”

The end result is an enthralling masterwork that elevates the film’s horror genre origins.  Columbia Pictures, which distributes Pet Sematary in the Philippines, especially love the piece that for the first time, they are not only using Hollywood posters in their marketing campaign but also Suratos’ artwork.

Now showing in the Philippines, Pet Sematary is distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures. #PetSematary

About Pet Sematary

Stephen King’s 1983 novel Pet Sematary has riveted generations of enthusiastic readers as a prime example of the writer’s gift for melding the everyday with the extraordinary to create supernatural thrillers that explore our darkest impulses. Poignant, petrifying and impossible to put down, the saga of the Creed family is a dark and terrifying parable about love and loss from one the most popular fiction writers in history.

Based on the seminal horror novel, Pet Sematary follows Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke), who, after relocating with his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz) and their two young children from Boston to rural Maine, discovers a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near the family’s new home. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his unusual neighbor, Jud Crandall (John Lithgow), setting off a perilous chain reaction that unleashes an unfathomable evil with horrific consequences.

Pet Sematary is directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer (Starry Eyes) from a screenplay by Jeff Buhler (The Prodigy) screen story by Matt Greenberg based on the novel by Stephen King (It, The Shining). The film stars Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Amy Seimetz (A Horrible Way to Die), Jeté Laurence (The Snowman), Hugo and Lucas Lavoie, and John Lithgow (Netflix’s The Crown).
