Nick Jonas, Awkwafina inject ‘Jumanji’ sequel with youthful vibe

Nick Jonas (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, TV’s Kingdom) and Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, Ocean’s 8) lend a hip, youthful vibe to Columbia Pictures’ epic action-adventure Jumanji: The Next Level (in Philippine cinemas December 4).

Back in play are the avatar team of Dwayne Johnson as Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Jack Black as Dr. Shelly Oberon, Kevin Hart as Mouse Finbar, Karen Gillan as Ruby Roundhouse.  Also returning is Nick Jonas as Seaplane, while Awkwafina stars as a new avatar, Ming.

Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough is the dashing pilot who helped the team on their previous quest as an avatar for Alex, a young man who had been stuck in Jumanji since 1996 before escaping with the teens in the previous film.

“The first film, we were able to get lightning in a bottle, and I feel like we have got a similar situation the second time around,” says Jonas. “[Diretor] Jake Kasdan just has this way of bringing out the best performance in everybody. It’s so great to be back.”

Nick Jonas, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan star in Jumanji: The Next Level

The newest avatar is the mysterious Ming, played by Awkwafina. While her weakness is pollen, her strengths are nothing to sneeze at; they include cat burglary, pick-pocketing, and safe cracking, which may prove useful in the series of challenges she’ll face as the world of Jumanji proves to be bigger and more dangerous than ever.

“Awkwafina’s a powerful performer. Rap artist, comedienne, actress…she’s a multi-hyphenate, so I was very excited when I found out that we had snagged her to be in the movie. I knew that she was gonna take it to another level, and she has,” exclaims co-star Jack Black. “She fit just like a glove on this project. She’s got sass and style and zest – the girl’s got magic! We all just jelled right out of the gate and doing scenes with her has been special.”

“I think that the message of Jumanji and the fun of it appeals to people of every age. When we look at superhero movies we see someone who obviously is flawed but has just some kind of insane power. Whereas everyone in Jumanji, they are normal people who become heroes in the game, and I think that resonates with anyone, across any culture. Bravery, courage, facing and understanding your flaws. Those are universal concepts and so old or young, I think that you really feel something when you see these characters,” says Awkwafina.

Jumanji: The Next Level reunites the four teenagers who survived the trials of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle as they return home to Brantford, New Hampshire from their respective colleges for the holiday break. Now college students, they’re trying to navigate the next level in their individual lives. After Spencer is compelled to go back into the game, Martha, Fridge and Bethany must team up and re-enter the world of Jumanji on a daring rescue mission to bring Spencer home.

But the game is broken, and is fighting back. Everything they know about Jumanji is about to change, as they discover that there’s more to it than just a jungle; it’s bigger, more dangerous, and has more thrilling obstacles to overcome. This means that anything can happen, so in addition to big action, incredible visual effects, and epic locations, you should also expect the unexpected.

Emilia Clarke displays singing prowess in ‘Last Christmas’

She recently wrapped the final season of the HBO award-winning series Game of Thrones where she played the lead role of Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons. Now, Emilia Clarke lights up the screen as the aspiring singer Kate, in Universal Pictures’ new romantic comedy Last Christmas.

In Last Christmas, Kate (Clarke) harrumphs around London, a bundle of bad decisions accompanied by the jangle of bells on her shoes, another irritating consequence from her job as an elf in a year-round Christmas shop. Tom (Henry Golding) seems too good to be true when he walks into her life and starts to see through so many of Kate’s barriers. As London transforms into the most wonderful time of the year, nothing should work for these two. But sometimes, you gotta let the snow fall where it may, you gotta listen to your heart … and you gotta have faith.

Discovering Clarke could sing was a bonus for director Paul Feig. “I lucked out on that one,” Feig says. “She has got such a pure voice, and it’s been so fun to see her explore it. She has an absolutely beautiful voice, but in our movie, she plays it down. This is not about Kate becoming a pop star; it’s about her getting back the one thing that made her truly happy.”

What drew Clarke to the role was the pure-of-heart spirit of the holiday tale. “Emma Thompson wrote this story with such care and truth,” Clarke says. “She understands the complexity of human nature and has intertwined that knowledge throughout. This story celebrates the uncertainties, scary moments and beauties of being a human being.” She pauses. “This film is a love letter to anyone who has ever felt confused or lost at times in their lives,” Clarke says. “It lends a hopeful message that it’s alright to feel this way and that you’ll soon come to know yourself.”

The performer introduces us to where we find her character. “Kate is a young woman living in London who’s a bit confused, lost and anchorless,” Clarke says. “As the story develops, the turbulent journey that she’s been through becomes clear. Although there were a few boulders along the way, she ultimately meets someone who helps her see a new perspective of life.”

Regarding the juxtaposition of Kate and the character’s love interest, Clarke says: “Tom and Kate have a classic meet cute. Tom embodies someone who just has it together. Kate is quite the opposite—constantly drunk, hungover, falling over and breaking things.”

It was a bit of life imitating art for Clarke when she learned of Last Christmas’ message. As a child, her granddad reminded her to “look up,” and take blinders off to see the world so many of us just take for granted. “One of the central themes of this film is the idea of ‘looking up,’” Clarke says. “It speaks to the importance of opening up, being aware of your surroundings and taking a moment to smell the roses of the world you’re living in.”

In Philippine cinemas November 27, Last Christmas is distributed in the Philippines by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures. #LastChristmasMovie

Anna and Elsa venture into The Unknown in Disney’s ‘Frozen 2’

Six years after Disney’s “Frozen” became an absolute phenomenon for kids around the world, the adventure of Queen Elsa, Princess Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven continues to make headway in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Frozen 2.”

Directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, the long-awaited sequel sees the animated gang venture out of Arendelle and travel to an ancient forest where they hope to find out the origins of Elsa’s extraordinary powers. “Frozen 2” takes viewers to a tale of discovery where the sisterhood bond of Queen Elsa and Princess Anna is tested, as they brave the land of the unknown together.

“Frozen,” which opened in 2013, is the highest-grossing animated feature ever released with more than $1.27 billion in global box office, two Academy awards, and a medley of hard-hitting soundtrack. Now, Disney brings in a whole new animated spectacle that fans of all ages will love with the much-anticipated theatrical release of “Frozen 2.” In “Frozen,” Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In “Frozen 2,” she must hope they are enough.

The all-new story takes place three years after the conclusion of the first movie, but according to its filmmakers, there is an underlying detail that ultimately leads to a great adventure — one that will bring clarity to everything we know about these beloved characters.

EPIC STORY – In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Frozen 2,” Queen Iduna (voice of Evan Rachel Wood) and King Agnarr (voice of Alfred Molina) share an epic story with Young Anna (voice of Hadley Gannaway) and Young Elsa (voice Mattea Conforti) about an enchanted forest and the potential danger that lingers. “Frozen 2” is now showing in PH cinemas. © 2019 Disney. Says director Jennifer Lee, who also penned the screenplay, “Elsa hears a voice calling that no one else can hear. She tries to block it, but it won’t stop. It shows her pieces of the past. It promises answers about why she is the way she is, so it’s both epic and a mystery, and she’s compelled to find that voice.” “’Frozen 2’ is even bigger and more epic than the first,” says film director Chris Buck. “But most importantly, the end of ‘Frozen’ and “Frozen 2” work together to form one complete story,” he added.

Fans are also in for a melodic treat as “Frozen 2 “showcases an all-new original soundtrack that complement the epic and heartwarming story. Written by no other than Oscar®-awarded Filipino-American songwriter, Robert Lopez with wife, Kristen Lopez, and featuring the voices of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad – the seven new tracks in the line-up are expected to hit the viewers’ hearts right from the beginning. Other artists on the soundtrack also include Kacey Musgraves with “All is Found,” Weezer with “Lost in the Woods,” and Panic! At the Disco with “Into the Unknown,” to name some.

Visit the “Frozen 2” interactive booth happening at the 2nd floor of SM Megamall Atrium from November 15 to 16, 2019, and get a chance immerse in the digital photo booth featuring Elsa and Anna. Cindy Miranda, Rhen Escaño star in erotic thriller ‘Adan’

Erotic thriller. Yam Laranas already made a name for himself in that genre with his directorial movies “Balahibong Pusa” (2001) and “Hibla (2002) before he went on to create horror thrillers like “Sigaw” (2004) and “Aurora” (2018), both a box office phenomenon. After almost two decades, this brilliant storyteller/filmmaker shows that he’s not yet done creating provocative stories.

This November, Viva Films presents “Adan”, a movie about love, lust and lies involving two women. A story by Yam Laranas, it stars Cindy Miranda (Bb. Pilipinas Tourism 2013) and Rhen Escaño (Best Supporting Actress nominee at the 2016 Cinema One Originals Film Festival for Si Magdalola at ang mga gago).

Love

Ellen (Rhen Escaño) and Marian (Cindy Miranda) are best friends who grew up together. Their friendship is the only thing that brings happiness to Ellen who yearns to be free from the clutches of her father, Amang Lucas (Bembol Roco), and their impoverished life in the countryside.

Lust

When Ellen finally attains freedom, she lives a life of excitement with Marian. Their closeness develops  into a sexually-charged romance.

Bonded like never before, the best friends-turned-lovers soon face a threat that will test their relationship.

Lies

Ellen is suspected by police inspector Abraham (Epi Quizon) to have killed her father. He’ll do anything to solve the case, but he cannot help but be attracted to Ellen’s beauty.

Ellen and Marian are now on the run. With their lives on the line, they start to doubt each other and turn against each other. Their love becomes tainted by secrets and lies.

In this erotic thriller, Cindy Miranda proves just how serious she is about acting, especially because she shares a number of torrid kissing scenes with Rhen.  She said in an interview, *”Mahal ko talaga ang pag-arte at kapag mahal mo ang isang bagay, lahat, makakaya mo na gawin.”

She commended her co-star Rhen for being professional in doing their intimate scenes. “Never akong naka-kiss ng isang babae, pero dahil propesyonal yung co-star ko, kahit awkwardness, wala akong naramdaman.”

Under the direction of Roman Perez, Jr. the scenes come out “flawless” according to Cindy. Prior to this film, Director Perez wrote and directed “Sol Searching” which won the People’s Choice Award in 2018 ToFarm Film.  The first film he directed was “#Ewankosau Saranghaeyo” in 2015.  “Adan” is his third directorial project.

Perez served as an assistant director of Yam Laranas in the Anne Curtis-starrer blockbuster film “Aurora”. His filmography as an A.D. includes various television shows like “Maalaala Mo Kaya”, “Ipaglaban Mo”, and films like “Lilet Never Happened” (2012) which competed in international film festivals and received five awards including Best Film.

With over a decade of experience in TV and movie production, theatre plays and advertising, director Perez advocates the development of the alternative theatre and filmmaking.  Witness how “Adan” fits this advocacy.

“Himig ng Pag-ibig”, a classic song originated by the band Asin and now performed by Shanne Dandan is the official theme song of this movie.

“Adan” is now showing in cinemas. From Viva Films, in cooperation with Aliud Entertainment and ImaginePerSecond.
