It’s a tale of vengeance and transformation in the opening salvo of GMA Public Affairs for 2024. Set to captivate audiences, the new riveting revenge series, “Makiling,” is scheduled for its world premiere on January 8 via GMA Afternoon Prime.

Headlining the series are Sultry Leading Lady Elle Villanueva and Sparkle Debonaire Derrick Monasterio, who previously starred together in the romance drama series ‘Return to Paradise.’

Elle portrays Amira, a resilient provincial girl thrust into the heart of Manila. As she grapples with insurmountable debts, Amira becomes the target of a ruthless group of affluent bullies. Enduring harrowing ordeals, including a near-death experience, she emerges transformed and fueled by a relentless quest for justice.

Elle shares, “The moment I heard about ‘Makiling,’ I was immediately drawn to its intriguing storyline. It’s a challenging and empowering role, and I’m honored to bring Amira’s character to life.”

Meanwhile, Derrick portrays Alex, Amira’s devoted childhood sweetheart and a protective habal-habal driver. Reflecting on his character’s depth, Derrick comments, “Playing Alex has been a transformative experience. His evolution mirrors my own growth as an actor.”

Powerhouse ensemble cast

Joining Elle and Derrick are this generation’s rising stars, including Thea Tolentino as Amira’s older sibling Rose and Kristoffer Martin, Myrtle Sarrosa, Royce Cabrera, Teejay Marquez, and Claire Castro, collectively known as the formidable “Crazy 5.” Additionally, esteemed character actors such as Mon Confiado, Bernadette Allyson-Estrada, Richard Quan, Cris Villanueva, Lui Manansala, Andrea Del Rosario, and Ms. Lotlot De Leon round out the stellar cast.

Set against the backdrop of Mt. Makiling, the series follows Amira’s journey as she navigates treacherous obstacles orchestrated by the ‘Crazy 5,’ led by the Terra siblings, Seb and Portia. Central to the narrative is the discovery of the Mutya, a mysterious flower with potent healing properties, setting the stage for a high-stakes battle between greed and altruism.

“Makiling” is helmed by the acclaimed team behind hit series such as “Lolong,” “The Write One,” and “Owe My Love.” With an original concept by Aeious Asin and the late Reign Loleng, and a script penned by Carlos Palanca Memorial Awardee Clar Estuar-Navarro, the series promises gripping storytelling and compelling character arcs.
