Rated X: MTRCB bans film ‘Chasing Tuna in the Ocean’ over China’s nine-dash line

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has declared the movie “Chasing Tuna in the Ocean” prohibited for local screening due to its inclusion of scenes prominently featuring the contentious nine-dash line. Awarded an “X” rating, the film is deemed “Not for Public Exhibition” within the Philippines.

This verdict follows a comprehensive evaluation by the MTRCB Committee on First Review. They determined that the portrayal of the nine-dash line in the film signifies China’s territorial assertion over the South China Sea. Such depiction is viewed as an affront to the dignity of the Republic of the Philippines and is in breach of Section 3 (c) of Presidential Decree No. 1986 (PD No. 1986).

“The MTRCB will uphold its authority and responsibilities in line with its mandate, and as citizens of the Philippines, we will not tolerate any material that undermines the honor of our nation,” stated MTRCB Chairperson and CEO Lala Sotto on Thursday.

“While ‘Chasing Tuna in the Ocean’ is currently barred from Philippine exhibition, the ‘X’ rating, administered by the Committee on First Review under PD No. 1986, does not prohibit Producers from seeking a Second review from the Board, provided they present a revised version with the objectionable scenes removed to comply with MTRCB regulations. This underscores the obligation for producers to adhere to MTRCB standards,” emphasized Sotto.

“Chasing Tuna in the Ocean” chronicles the challenges faced by fishermen hunting for tuna in the Indian Ocean. It showcases their bravery and accountability from a nuanced perspective.
