In observance of Araw ng Kagitingan, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. paid respect for Filipino war veterans and retired Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) members by visiting the Renal Dialysis Center at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) and donating PhP150 million for a new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine.
VMMC’s Renal Dialysis Center serves over 200 patients, including World War II veterans and retired military personnel, providing free services and medications. Plans for expansion to accommodate more hemodialysis patients are underway.
To improve patient care, VMMC plans to establish a kidney transplantation center within three to five years. The need for President Marcos Jr.’s donation arose when the Department of National Defense (DND) requested PhP150 million to replace the unserviceable MRI machine acquired in 2011.
VMMC’s Role in Healthcare
The acquisition of a high-resolution MRI machine will enhance diagnostic accuracy at VMMC. The PhP150 million donation, facilitated by the President’s Social Fund, signifies a significant advancement in medical technology for patient benefit.
Established in 1955 through United States Public Law No. 865, VMMC remains committed to providing superior healthcare to Filipino war veterans and retired AFP personnel. With a capacity of 766 beds and 1,562 personnel, VMMC served nearly 9,000 in-patients and over 230,000 outpatients last year.
The medical facility contributes to medical education with 22 accredited fellowship and residency training programs. Collaborating with educational institutions and hospitals, VMMC extends its expertise through training programs. Additionally, the center conducts five medical missions annually, providing essential medical services to nearby communities.
