PH gov’t says it has plans to control electricity costs

Through a media session held in Pikit, Cotabato, Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. disclosed government initiatives aimed at managing electricity prices amidst surging demand. He further reassured the public, emphasizing the absence of an artificial power crisis but acknowledging strain on the power system due to drought conditions.

Asserting vigilant monitoring, President Marcos pledged governmental intervention to stabilize electricity rates. “Ang naging consumption natin biglang tumaas talaga dahil napaka nit. Kaya’t nakabantay kami nang husto. Kaya naman nagkakaroon ng problema sa mga iba’t ibang sistema kaya namin tinututukan,” he told reporters.

(“Our consumption suddenly increased significantly because of the extreme heat. So, we’re closely monitoring it. That’s why we’re focusing on various systems.”)

Regarding price hikes, he outlined forthcoming plans and strategies to mitigate increases in electricity rates, particularly during this crisis period. “At ‘yung pagtaas ng [presyo]— mayroon kaming mga plano, mga strategy para hindi na magtaas ng presyo ng kuryente. At least for now, in this crisis time,” he said.

“On the [electricity rate] hikes, we have plans, strategies so that electricity prices won’t increase. At least for now, in this crisis time,” he said.

One focal area involves pressing the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) to fulfill commitments in expanding transmission infrastructure to enhance electricity access, particularly in off-grid regions.

President Marcos made these announcements while attending the inauguration of the Malitubog-Maridagao Irrigation Project Stage II (MMIP II) in Cotabato.
