‘Skin color, flat-chested, not a good actor’: How Lovi Poe overthrew her insecurities in showbiz

Lovi Poe, a household name in the entertainment industry for nearly two decades, has continually demonstrated her multifaceted talent as an actress, recording artist, and endorser. Despite facing insecurities, she has triumphed over them, emerging stronger and more self-assured.

At a recent media conference following her contract renewal with skincare brand SCD, marking her second year as a brand ambassador, Lovi heartfully discussed her past insecurities and the steps she took to overcome them.

Facing early challenges

Lovi shared as an answer to CinemaBravo’s question, “I think never naman mawawala yung insecurities natin sa body natin (I think insecurities about our bodies never really go away). Siguro nasa next level siya when I was starting sa industry (They were at a different level when I was starting in the industry). Because, I was criticized for so many things: skin color, [flat-chestedness], not being a good actor when I was starting, so many things!”

However, she emphasized the importance of perspective. “But you have to understand that it’s a learning experience as you grow older, di ba (right)? When you’re a teenager, parang you know so little about life, about taking care of yourself, and about yung perception mo about life (and about your perception of life).”

Adopting a positive mindset

Lovi continued, “I think, how I went about it is that, siguro for me what’s most important is that you live your life on a day-to-day basis with positive thoughts, and you would want good things to happen to yourself and to other people as well. It doesn’t mean because you’re insecure, you’re gonna drag people down, no! You lift yourself up by lifting other people up as well. So, I think, yun yong pinaka-number one for me (that’s the most important thing for me): live a happy life, everything will follow.”

She further explained how to handle criticism constructively. “You don’t really have to live your life, for example, you’ve been criticized, you take it in and maybe understand where it’s coming from, and you learn from it, and then you grow. It doesn’t necessarily mean they wanna say bad things about you. Just maybe it’s your way of going to the next step of learning. I think we have just to take it that way.

“Not everyone has that bad bone naman sa body (Not everyone has that bad bone in their body), but some people do. Not everyone has a bad bone sa body (Not everyone has a bad bone in their body) and would want to bring you down. You probably should take it is as constructive criticism, right, and then you learn from it.”

Reaching a good place

When asked if she feels she’s now in a good place, Lovi responded confidently, “Oh, yes, I’m in a very good place, because, of course, we could always have our moments na we don’t feel confident, we feel tired… Things like that! I’m very happy where I am now. And that’s I think the most important thing.

“I remember when I was starting, not everyone would trust you or would believe in you, and I wouldn’t say na never akong nagkaroon ng moment na parang ‘Oh, I will prove these people wrong.’ (I wouldn’t say that I never had a moment where I thought, ‘Oh, I will prove these people wrong.’) For me, that’s a wrong mindset. I think you do things for yourself, and the moment you let go of all these negative energy, negative thoughts, negative people, good things will come. You live for yourself and you live to be happy.”

Celebrating a strong partnership

Lovi Poe’s renewal as the official endorser of SCD is now official, marking an exciting continuation of their partnership.

In a heartfelt video message, Lovi expressed her gratitude, saying, “Gusto kong magpasalamat sa inyong lahat (I want to thank all of you) for always welcoming me… bilang part ng family ninyo (as part of your family). And I just feel truly blessed… There really is nothing like being part of the SCD family.”

SCD’s CEO, Gracee M. Angeles, shared her enthusiasm for the strengthened partnership with the Kapamilya actress: “Looking forward to more products and more projects with Lovi Poe. Thank you, mga ka-Diyosa (thank you, fellow goddesses)!”

Lovi Poe’s journey is an inspiring testament to overcoming insecurities and achieving success through positivity and perseverance. Here’s to more inspirations and lives touched by Lovi and SDC’s fruitful partnership in the coming years!
