The Award for Promoting Philippines-China Understanding (APPCU) 2025 is now accepting nominations. It was announced during a press launch at the 86-year-old Kamuning Bakery Café, which was attended by distringuished experts: Atty. Raul Lambino (Chairman of APPCU), Mr. Sixto Benedicto (President of APPCU), Dr. Rommel Banlaoi (geopolitics and security expert), Mr. Lucio Pitlo III (foreign policy expert and geopolitics professor), and George Cham (civic leader of Pangasinan province)
APPCU is an annual recognition honors Filipinos who have made remarkable contributions to strengthening Philippines-China relations by fostering mutual understanding and friendship.
Nominations are open from February 26 to March 25, 2025.

About the Award for Promoting Philippines-China Understanding (APPCU)
The Award for Promoting Philippines-China Understanding (APPCU) was established in 2021 through a collaboration between the Association for Philippines-China Understanding (APCU) and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of the Philippines.
This award recognizes individuals who have significantly contributed to fostering stronger cultural, diplomatic, and academic ties between the Philippines and China. It also serves as a platform to encourage more Filipinos to engage in efforts that promote bilateral relations.
Held annually, APPCU coincides with Filipino-Chinese Friendship Day and commemorates the formal establishment of diplomatic ties between the Philippines and China on June 9, 1975.
Launched on January 16, 2021, APPCU was introduced during the Manila Forum for China-Philippines Relations, attended by State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. This initiative highlights the importance of people-to-people connections in strengthening state-to-state relations.
Eligible candidates for the award must be Filipino citizens who have dedicated their careers or expertise to advancing Philippines-China bilateral relations.
APPCU Award Categories
APPCU honors outstanding individuals in three categories:
- Hall of Fame Category – Recognizes highly esteemed individuals whose long-standing contributions have created a lasting impact on Philippines-China relations, with their work acknowledged across various communities.
- Outstanding Contributions Category – Acknowledges individuals who have made notable contributions to enhancing mutual understanding, cooperation, and friendship between the two nations.
- Major Contributions Category – Honors individuals whose work has significantly impacted grassroots communities and fostered meaningful exchanges between Filipinos and Chinese.
Selection Process
Nominees will undergo a rigorous three-round selection process:
- Preliminary Round (Elimination Round)
- Second Round of Judging
- Final Round of Judging
Each round is conducted by a panel of three judges.
The APPCU 2025 aims to recognize individuals whose work has strengthened Philippines-China diplomatic, cultural, and social relations. Through this award, the spirit of friendship and cooperation between the two nations continues to grow.
Awardees will receive:
- A trophy or plaque of recognition
- A certificate of achievement
- Prize money for each Laureate
Winners will be honored at an official awarding ceremony on June 3, 2025.
