‘Pilato’: New Filipino musical reimagines ‘greatest story ever told’

In an age where misinformation spreads faster than ever and truth is often elusive, a question posed over 2,000 years ago remains strikingly relevant: “Ano ba ang katotohanan?” (What really is the truth?) This profound inquiry lies at the heart of Pilato, an all-original Filipino musical set to captivate audiences this April at the PETA Theater Center.

SYNOPSIS: Set during Roman rule in Judea, the musical examines Pilato’s moral and political struggles as he grapples with his responsibilities as governor, his own ambitions, and the growing presence of Hesus, whose teachings and actions challenge the status quo.

A fresh perspective on a timeless story

With a daring narrative and powerful social relevance, Pilato revisits the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ—but through the eyes of Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor forced to navigate the treacherous intersection of power, faith, and duty.

The musical traces Pilato’s journey, from his early ambitions in Rome to his appointment as prefect of Judea, a province rife with political and religious unrest. Every decision he makes is scrutinized by a host of pivotal figures: Josepo, the enigmatic historiographer; Caiaphas, the calculating high priest; Procla, his wise and foreboding wife; and Hesus, the mysterious and magnetic figure rumored to be the King of the Jews.

A reflection on truth and society

Premiering during Holy Week and nearing the 2025 national elections, Pilato is more than just a retelling of a biblical story—it’s a thought-provoking exploration of truth in an era where facts are constantly questioned.

“Information reaches us in countless ways, but how do we sift through the chaos to uncover the truth? Would we even recognize it if we came face-to-face with it?” shares writer-director Eldrin Veloso. “Pilato dares to unravel the mystery of truth’s many faces. With our society teetering on the brink of a post-truth era, this is a story that needs to be told—now more than ever.”

Featuring seasoned musical theater actors and rising stars, Pilato promises a gripping emotional and intellectual journey. This production also marks the theatrical debut of The Corner Studio, a creative agency known for its compelling storytelling across branding, production, marketing, and design.
