‘Lilo & Stitch’ review: Adorably beautiful live-action remake

From the moment the credits rolled on Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch, it was clear: they got it right. This faithful yet fresh adaptation not only preserves the most touching elements of the beloved 2002 animated film—it also stands tall as one of Disney’s best live-action remakes to date.

Set in Hawaii, the story follows six-year-old Lilo Pelekai, played by newcomer Maia Kealoha, a spirited Native Hawaiian girl who loves hula, surfing, and wildlife—and has a particular fascination with all things “gross.” Imaginative and rebellious, Lilo often finds herself misunderstood and labeled a “weirdie” by her classmates. Still, beneath her fun-loving optimism, she hides a deep grief from having lost her parents years earlier. Her life takes a wild turn when she adopts what she believes is a dog from the local shelter—but it turns out to be Stitch, a blue, koala-like alien genetic experiment designed for destruction.

Voiced once again by Lilo & Stitch co-creator Chris Sanders, Stitch is unruly, impulsive, and freakishly strong—a chaotic, ugly-cute wrecking ball who upends Lilo’s world in the most endearing way. As aliens and social workers close in, Lilo teaches Stitch about love, loyalty, and the true meaning of family—‘ohana.

What sets this remake apart is its emotional authenticity. It reconnects audiences with the core themes that made the original a classic: healing through connection, the strength of sisterhood, and the enduring power of unconditional love. The film remains sweet and sincere, succeeding where many remakes falter—by staying true to its roots while gently expanding the story.

Kealoha shines in her debut, capturing Lilo’s complexity with charm and depth. Her chemistry with Stitch feels just as magical and mischievous as it did two decades ago. And Sanders’ return as the voice of Stitch adds a nostalgic punch, anchoring the film with the same quirky energy fans have always adored.

In a sea of hit-or-miss reimaginings, Lilo & Stitch rises as a triumph. It honors its source material while injecting a new sense of heart, humor, and cultural richness. After several lackluster remakes, this film feels like Disney’s most heartfelt comeback in years.

Lilo & Stitch is best enjoyed with family—and it’s a must-see on the big screen. It’s a reminder that even the most unlikely of friendships can create the strongest of bonds.
