CineGoma 2025 opens call for short film entries for its 6th edition

CineGoma, the country’s only film festival organized by an engineering company, has officially opened its call for entries for its sixth edition happening in 2025.

The festival held its first-ever press conference on Wednesday, July 30, at a microcinema in Quezon City, where indie filmmaker and Cannes Palme d’Or winner Raymond Red—who also serves as co-festival director and creative consultant—joined festival director Xavier Cortez of RK Rubber in answering questions from the entertainment press in attendance, including CinemaBravo.

Cortez, who also sits as RK Rubber’s CEO, acknowledged how many are still curious why an industrial company is behind a film festival in the first place.

“So, alam ko yun yung tanong ng karamihan eh. Engineering company pero merong film festival,” he quipped. (I know that’s what many people ask—why an engineering company has a film fest.)

“So actually parang kami lang yung industrial company o engineering company na merong film festival. So yun, CineGoma. From the word itself: cinema at goma.” (We might be the only industrial or engineering company with a film fest. That’s why it’s called CineGoma—from the words cinema and rubber.)

He went on to explain that the festival began as an internal activity at RK Rubber.

“Nag-start siya noong November 2019 bilang bahagi lang ng team building ng RK Rubber,” he narrated. “Kasi sa RK, we’re big fans of education and training. Iniisip namin sa executive team kung paano mas mahasa yung mga tao namin sa manufacturing, leadership, paggawa ng rubber products.”

(It started in November 2019 as just part of RK Rubber’s team building. At RK, we’re big fans of education and training. Our executive team would often think of ways to improve our people’s skills in manufacturing, leadership, and rubber production.)

He also shared that it used to be his dream to become a filmmaker too, so they created this film festival. It was originally just for the company, but now they have opened it up to the public.

Raymond Red, who joined CineGoma in its third year, expressed his support for the festival’s unique advocacy.

“Isa ito sa mga pinaka-unique na festivals sa Pilipinas. And this is also one of the very few na may malinaw na advocacy,” he explained. (This is one of the most unique festivals in the country. And it’s also one of the few with a clear advocacy.) “Education, training, industry—and cinema.”
