Ara Mina, Jeric Raval, Teejay Marquez shine in ‘Mamay’ as biopic bags 10 FAMAS nods

The inspiring biographical film Mamay: A Journey to Greatness has earned 10 nominations at the 73rd Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Awards, one of the most prestigious honors in Philippine cinema.

Leading the recognition for the cast is Ara Mina, nominated for Best Actress for her moving portrayal of Mayor Marcos Mamay’s supportive partner. Veteran action star Jeric Raval is also in the spotlight with a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his powerful performance as the titular leader. Meanwhile, Teejay Marquez brings depth to the role of a young Mamay, portraying his resilience during his formative years.

The film held a press conference last August 19 in a restaurant in Quezon City to talk about their nominations and future plans. Watch our coverage below.

Behind the camera, director Neal Buboy Tan received nods for both Best Director and Best Screenplay, showcasing his vision in narrating Mamay’s remarkable life story. The film also highlights strong technical work through Cyrus Khan’s production design, Gilbert Obispo’s cinematography, and an evocative original song Hamon composed by Vehnee Saturno and performed by Gerald Santos.

The Story of Mayor Marcos Mamay

Mamay: A Journey to Greatness recounts the struggles and triumphs of Nunungan Mayor Marcos Mamay, who rose above poverty and a history of rido (family conflict) through education and peace advocacy. His leadership and commitment to unity paved the way for community development and progress.

“I grew up in conflict, but I chose not to let it define my future. Instead, I focused on education and peace, believing they were the only weapons strong enough to change lives,” Mayor Mamay shared.

He also pointed out that his experiences symbolize the struggles and hopes of many Filipinos: “My story is proof that no matter how difficult your beginnings are, if you remain determined in your journey, you can achieve greatness—not just for yourself but for your community.”
