The family drama How to Get Away From My Toxic Family has become a significant milestone for Filipino cinema in the United States. The film, written by Ogie Diaz and co-produced with KreativDen, features Zanjoe Marudo as Arsenio, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) chef who returns to the Philippines after years in Dubai.
Hoping to finally fulfill his dream of opening his own restaurant, Arsenio instead finds himself confronting deep-seated family issues that test his patience, loyalty, and sense of self. The film invites audiences to reflect on the thin line between sacrifice and selfishness—especially within the context of Filipino family dynamics.
U.S. Promotion by Global Artists Entertainment
The movie also marked a historic milestone for Global Artists Entertainment, headed by CEO Tommie Mopia and based in Beverly Hills, California. In partnership with Oliver Carnay of International Artists PR and Talent Management, the company proudly served as the film’s exclusive U.S. promoter. This project became the flagship film tour of Global Artists Entertainment, highlighting their mission to spotlight Filipino talent on an international stage.
Following its premiere, the film drew sold-out screenings across several key U.S. cities, starting in Colorado Springs before continuing to Las Vegas, Nevada; New York; and Honolulu, Hawaii.
Mopia emphasized how proud the company was to champion the film as a heartfelt tribute to modern-day heroes—the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). He also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support of Filipino-American communities and shared the company’s vision of bringing more Filipino films and live concerts to audiences across the United States in the years to come.
Historic Recognition in Colorado Springs
Following the Colorado Springs premiere, Mopia and his team were honored with Certificates of Commendation in the presence of Hon. Donna LaVigne (Philippine Honorary Consulate of Colorado and Southern Wyoming) and Ms. Yemi Sanchez, representing Mayor Yemi Mobolade of Colorado Springs.
The mayor’s office and the consulate also presented a plaque of commendation, recognizing the event as the first-ever Filipino movie premiere in Colorado.
This unprecedented recognition symbolizes the growing cultural pride and visibility of the Filipino community across the U.S.
Producer’s Reflection
Producer Ogie Diaz shared his heartfelt appreciation for the collaboration:
“With How to Get Away From My Toxic Family, we set out to tell a story that resonates deeply with audiences—especially those who know the immense love and sacrifice of OFWs. This film is raw and honest about what happens when those bonds shift from support to pain. We hope it sparks conversations about family, expectations, and the courage to choose one’s own happiness, even when it means making difficult choices.”
