Marikina City Mayor Maan Teodoro intervened in the water supply issue affecting Barangay Tumana, preventing residents from spending the Christmas season without access to water.
Mayor Teodoro personally went to the Manila Water Marikina Service Area office to pay ₱15 million as partial settlement of the barangay’s outstanding obligation. The payment allowed Manila Water to proceed with restoring water services in the area.
Barangay Tumana’s unpaid balance reached ₱37,192,199.98 after Barangay Captain Akiko Centeno allegedly failed to remit water payments collected from residents to Manila Water. Due to the accumulated debt, the utility provider cut off the barangay’s water supply.
Following the service interruption, Mayor Teodoro pushed for the immediate passage of an ordinance at the Sangguniang Panlungsod allocating ₱15 million to cover part of the debt and enable the resumption of water services.
After the payment was made, the mayor requested Manila Water to restore water supply to the 13 common water points in Barangay Tumana. Mayor Teodoro and Marikina 1st District Representative Marcy Teodoro later witnessed the restoration of water access in the barangay.
Mayor Teodoro also stated that those responsible for the water supply disruption would be held accountable.
“May mananagot, at sisiguruhin nating hindi na ito mauulit. At malinaw po ito: hindi ko papayagan na ang mga taga-Tumana ang magdusa dahil sa pagkukulang ng iilan,” she said.
(There will be accountability, and we will ensure that this will not happen again. It is clear that I will not allow the people of Tumana to suffer because of the shortcomings of a few.)
