Here are the screening schedules at CINEMATHEQUE CENTRE MANILA this January 2016. All film viewings are FREE admission on a first-come, first-served basis except for ‘Mula sa Kung Ano ang Noon’ (P200) and ‘Esoterika: Maynila’ (P100).
Born out of the need for an alternative and accessible venue for exhibiting and preserving Filipino and world cinema, the Cinematheque Centre Manila joins its predecessors in Baguio, Iloilo, Davao, and Zamboanga, becoming the first of its kind in Metro Manila.
Created in the hope of elevating our national identity and heritage by further exposure and appreciation for cinema, the institution is especially dedicated to preserving and enriching film culture in the Philippines.
The Cinematheque Centre Manila houses the Cinematheque Manila Theater, the Museo ng Pelikulang Pilipino, offices of the National Film Archives of the Philippines, the FILM ASEAN Knowledge Management Center, and the offices of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), as well as the supplementary Cinematheque Café, Film shop, and classrooms.
The Cinematheque Centre Manila aims to be a hub for the overall development of the community’s education and understanding towards Filipino and international film culture. As such, film screenings, workshops, symposiums, and other events will strive to empower future generations of Filipino filmmakers.
The Film ASEAN Knowledge Management Center, which includes the FILM ASEAN library and the FILM ASEAN Systems Training classrooms, will connect the local film scene with that of its neighboring ASEAN states, being Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, to support the ASEAN integration in relation to film culture, that will greatly benefit the overall development of film and audiovisuals in the region.
Found in the Cinematheque Centre Manila is also the National Film Archives of the Philippines which is mandated to preserve and restore the country’s film heritage, and ensure proper archiving through various formats.
The Cinematheque Theater will be screening a line-up of special Filipino and Danish films throughout the month of January celebrating the Cinematheque Centre Manila’s inauguration. The run of films celebrating the inauguration will begin on January 8 and end on the 31st.
Kicking off the Cinematheque Manila’s first crop of regular screenings is National Artist Lino Brocka’s much-celebrated Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag (1975), on January 8, 2016 at 5:00pm. Heralded as one of the country’s greatest films and considered Brocka’s finest, the film is lead by naïve probinsiyano Julio on his search for his lost love, Ligaya, in brutal Manila, succumbing to the misery and agony of the city. A harsh, realist portrait of Manila and the Martial Law era, the classic was restored in 2013 and went on to screen at the Cannes Film Festival.
