‘Magbuwag Ta Kay’ (Let’s Break Up, Kay) is a 2017 romantic drama set in Cebu and in the Cebuano language which features local Cebuano talents of national renown, former Star Power contestant Akiko Solon and social media celebrity Rowell “Medyo Maldito” Ucat.
The film explores romance and relationships in today’s millennial Filipino society. It also stars Ligaya Rabago and Dante Luzon with the special participation of Mark Anthony “Snake Princess” Abucejo. The film is directed by Reuben Joseph Aquino with Janice Perez from the screenplay written by Therese Villarante and Jude Gitamondoc. The production crew includes director of photography Marvene Rom Munda, production designer Antonio Carlos Uypuanco, wardrobe chief Insih Rafia Abubakar, hair-and-makeup stylist Jessa Horca, and casting director Donald Villamero.
The film was shot in April 2017 for ten days at various locations of Cebu province, particularly in Cebu City, Mactan, Moalboal, and Dumanjug. MAGBUWAG TA KAY could be considered as the first Cebuano full-length motion picture shot with the Blackmagic Ursa Mini 4K Digital Cinema camera. The film’s soundtrack features original and contemporary Visayan Pop and Visayan Rock songs, the majority of which was written for the film.
The film is produced by Charles and Sunshine Lim of Heritage Productions, a digital media and motion picture production and promotions company based in Lapu-Lapu City, Mactan, Cebu.
Magbuwag Ta Kay tells of college sweethearts Roy and Kay who plan to break up like adults, without the drama, when Kay’s family arranged her entry to Canada. They still have a month left to make great memories together and give their romance the ending it deserves. But you know what Google says about best-laid plans, often they get awkward despite their best intentions.
Distributed by Viva Films, ‘Magbuwag Ta Kay’ opens March 7, 2018 in select SM cinemas in the Philippines.
