‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ review: Biggest, joyous video game adaptation

Grab some popcorn, settle in, and get ready to be transported to a world of adventure and fun in ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie.’

It is an animated film based on Nintendo’s Mario video game franchise. It features an origin story for the Mario brothers (voiced by Chris Pratt and Charlie Day), two Italian-American plumbers who are transported to an alternate world and become entangled in a battle between the Mushroom Kingdom, led by Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), and the Koopas, led by Bowser (Jack Black).

The film is a colorful animated adventure, a blast from beginning to end! While it may not be for everyone, “The Super Mario Bros.” movie works for both fans of the long-lasting game franchise and people who want an entertaining escape. It gets a thumbs-up from adults and is a pure delight for kids.

It is everything fans could hope for. The crisp visuals, nostalgic sound effects, and hidden Easter eggs are up-to-the-details accurate. Moreover, the versatile and refreshing voice talents of the cast totally fit the characters we have all come to love. The voice acting will keep fans invested. Chris Pratt was on point the whole time, even though he lacks an Italian accent. Charlie Day plays his usual harried persona that fits the voice of Luigi, a character who mainly exists to support his brother. Jack Black is born to voice and inspire Bowser, a hopeless romantic who can only express his feelings through song and world domination. While Anya Taylor-Joy makes a perfect Princess Peach, a leader who must feign bravery to protect her adorable Mushroom Kingdom people. Everything really plays along with a bang!

This is possibly the best video game movie yet. It is pure entertainment, harmless, and never insults our intelligence. “The Super Mario Bros.” movie could even give you the most pleasant movie experience ever — on the biggest screen possible, popping those vibrant colors right in front of you! Not only is it awesome and colorful, but, most importantly, very, very fun! This is definitely a love letter to the kids inside us.
