Actor-politician Arjo Atayde shared the reason behind his decision to turn down a role in the upcoming Kapamilya action-drama series Incognito, which features Daniel Padilla and Richard Gutierrez, along with Maris Racal and Anthony Jennings.
During a media conference at his headquarters in Quezon City, where he serves as the congressman for its first district, Arjo explained why he declined the star-studded project slated for release in 2025.
“I feel really bad for not being part of that show, for anything. But again, like what they say, hindi ko na pahahabain pa ang explanation (I won’t prolong the explanation). It is with a heavy heart that I have to say no because obviously, I have priorities right now.
“I really want to be 100% committed,” he continued. “If I’m not at 100%, it would also be unfair to my co-actors. Given the opportunity, of course, I want to give it my all. For now, I have to focus on this.”
The event doubled as a thanksgiving party for his media friends and supporters in celebration of his win as Best Male Lead in a TV Program/Series at the 2024 ContentAsia Awards held in Taipei, Taiwan. The award recognized his compelling portrayal of Anton dela Rosa, the central character of Cattleya Killer.

Yet Another Best Actor Win
On his latest accolade, which further cements his reputation in action-drama roles, Arjo remarked, “I guess none of us expect anything. To be nominated is already such a privilege. The recognition itself is a bonus, as we always say. It’s not about being humble; it’s about trying to push Filipino content and connections in a better way.
“I don’t work for awards. I never did. I’m just really enjoying what I do and learning, especially from the past projects I’ve been involved with,” he added.
Cattleya Killer is a Filipino crime-thriller series produced by ABS-CBN and Nathan Studios, the production company led by Arjo’s mother, Sylvia Sanchez. It premiered globally on Prime Video on June 1, 2023. Directed by Dan Villegas and written by Dodo Dayao, the series follows a murder investigation linked to a notorious serial killer from the past, blending suspense, mystery, and psychological drama.
Upcoming Projects
Naturally, questions about his future projects came up, especially about his return to television, where his career started.
“Maybe next year,” he replied with a big smile. “I’ve been away from free TV for about five years, and a lot has happened since then. I also have responsibilities to fulfill. But I’m definitely looking forward to coming back, even just for a while, to my playground and learning from the people I’ve worked with.”
During the thanksgiving’s program proper, an exciting showcase of upcoming projects for wide release was presented, including the political action-drama series The Bagman, the international feature film Moonglow, and the much-anticipated Topakk (Trigger).
In the eight-episode The Bagman, an award-winning ensemble brings Arjo together with John Arcilla and Judy Ann Santos. This premium spin-off of the iWant digital series Bagman also stars Tirso Cruz III, Ryan Eigenmann, Charlie Dizon, Gela Atayde, Joem Bascon, Art Acuna, Chai Fonacier, Sheila Valderrama, Ana Abad Santos, Al Tantay, Nino Muhlach, Jeffrey Santos, and Ynez Veneracion.
On the other hand, Moonglow is the fourth feature by US-based Filipino filmmaker Isabel Sandoval, who also stars as the leading lady. Set in 1970s Manila, the film follows a jaded female police detective who, unbeknownst to her colleagues, is the mastermind behind a successful heist. However, she is partnered with an obsessively truth-seeking detective to solve the very crime she orchestrated.

Additionally, Richard Somes’ action thriller Topakk—featuring Julia Montes and Sid Lucero—is set for its Philippine cinema release soon. It first screened at the 78th Cannes Film Festival in May 2023 and premiered at the 76th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland in August 2023.
Addressing Rumors About His Family
On the political front, Arjo firmly dispelled rumors that his mother, Sylvia Sanchez, would be stepping in to replace him in politics.
“No, it’s not true,” he stated. “I have much to do. We’ve been working very hard in the district. As part of my commitment to the people, I’ve kept my schedule clear until after the elections to focus on my duties.”
He also denied speculations about his wife, Maine Mendoza, being pregnant. “We’re just enjoying our time together as a married couple. During my free days and vacations, we travel, and people see that. Those are the only times we get to spend together, to be honest.”
He added, “When we’re in Manila, she has her responsibilities, and I have mine. But with proper time management, we’re both very happy.”

Heartfelt Gratitude
During the awards ceremony in Taipei, Arjo expressed his heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in his second international victory.
“Thank you to everyone. I’m forever indebted to all the actors I’ve worked with, the people behind the camera, and everyone who helped me gather the strength to pull off this series.
“This is my first time in Taipei, and this award is such a reward for that experience,” he shared. “Lastly, my family—thank you for all your support. To my wife, thank you for understanding the hard work it takes to do this.”
He also expressed gratitude to ABS-CBN and its executives, saying, “To ABS-CBN, Tita Cory Vidanes, Sir Carlo Katigbak, and Sir Ruel Bayani, maraming, maraming salamat po (thank you very much).”
Arjo’s previous international win came in 2020 when he was awarded Best Actor at the Asian Academy Creative Awards for his role in Bagman, where he portrayed a barber caught in the dangerous world of politics. This made him the first Filipino to win at the region’s most prestigious platform for creative excellence.
As Arjo continues to make waves in both acting and politics, his passion and dedication to his craft remain evident. Fans can only anticipate what’s next for this talented actor as he navigates his multifaceted career.
