Actress Iza Calzado, famed for her portrayal of “the first Darna,” publicly supported former Senator Bam Aquino’s senatorial candidacy after participating in his campaign motorcade on Sunday. She took to Instagram to share moments from their journey through Metro Manila and formally announce her endorsement for Aquino.
“Naalala ko: ganitong tao ang kailangan natin sa Senado. May puso. May paninindigan. May ginagawa,” Calzado shared, emphasizing that the nation and its youth deserve nothing less than the best leadership.
(“I remember: this is the kind of person we need in the Senate. Someone with heart. Someone with principles. Someone who takes action,”) Calzado remarked, underscoring the importance of quality leadership for the country’s future.
“And to me, Bam is one of the best. Sana maibalik natin siya sa Senado,” she added, urging for Aquino’s return to the Senate.
(“I hope we can bring him back to the Senate.”)
Calzado said it was an honor to join Aquino’s motorcade, adding that she witnessed firsthand the former senator’s kindness and genuine concern for Filipinos during the event.
“Sa maikling panahon na nakasama ko siya, nakita ko agad ang puso niya para sa tao. Sabi niya gusto niyang nasa gilid ng sasakyan para makamay ang mga tao. Sabi rin niya, hugger siya. Nakarelate ako kasi hugger din ako,” she said.
(“In the short time I spent with him, I immediately saw his heart for the people. He said he wanted to be on the side of the vehicle to shake hands with the people. He also said he’s a hugger. I could relate because I’m also a hugger.”)
The actress recalled moving encounters with people who personally thanked Aquino for championing the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act (RA 10931), which made college education free in state and local universities and colleges.
“Ramdam ko ang pagmamahal ng mga tao, lalo na ng kabataan, para kay Bam. May isang pamilyang nag-abang para lang magpasalamat. Pero ang pinakanaantig sa damdamin ko ay isang lalaking nagngangalang Rey na nag-abot ng sulat kay Bam dahil nakapagtapos siya ng kolehiyo with honors dahil sa batas na ‘yon,” she said.
(“I felt the love from the people, especially from the youth, for Bam. There was one family who waited just to say thank you. But what really touched me the most was a man named Rey, who handed a letter to Bam because he graduated from college with honors because of that law.”)
Calzado was joined by other celebrities and influencers, including Piolo Pascual, Bea Binene, Kerwin King, Zion Aguirre, Gabe Pineda, Niño San Jose, Andrea Guevarra, Andrei Hermida, and Damien Villaflor.
Aquino ranked 11th in the latest Pulse Asia survey conducted from April 20 to 24.
