Jojo Mendrez drops modern revival of OPM hit ‘Yakap’

OPM singer Jojo Mendrez, often referred to as “The Revival King,” introduces a fresh take on the classic Filipino song “Yakap,” first popularized by Junior in 1979.

Bringing his distinct vocal style and emotional delivery, Mendrez offers a contemporary rendition that reconnects audiences with the enduring appeal of the track while opening it up to a younger generation of listeners.

“It is a dream song for me,” Mendrez shared. “Star Music selected the track during one of our meetings and said it suited me perfectly. I also expressed my wish to have Jonathan Manalo arrange it—and they made it happen.”

True to his title, Mendrez has built a strong reputation for reviving iconic OPM hits. Among his notable remakes is “Tuyo Na’ng Damdamin” by the Apo Hiking Society, which he was among the first to reinterpret and previously performed on Eat Bulaga. He has also reimagined several classics, including “Magkabilang Mundo” (originally by Jireh Lim), “Sana,” and “Handog” by Florante—his version of the latter earning Revival Song of the Year honors at the 11th Star Awards for Music by PMPC.

His memorable rendition of “Somewhere in My Past,” originally performed by Julie Vega and composed by Mon del Rosario, remains one of his standout performances, going viral with over 50 million views on social media. Expanding his repertoire further, Mendrez has also revived the international hit “Valentine” by Jim Brickman.

He is set to release another remake, “Boy,” originally by Timmy Cruz and composed by Mon del Rosario. Also in the works are his interpretations of “Bakit Ba Ganyan” (Dina Bonnevie), “Tamis ng Unang Halik” (Tina Paner), and “Pangako” by Kindred Garden.

In addition to revivals, Mendrez continues to record original music. His releases include “Basta Ikaw,” composed and arranged by the late Andrei Dionisio, as well as “Diwa ng Pasko,” “Kahit Sandali,” and “Mula Nang Mawala’y Sayo .” He also penned “Minahal Kita,” featured in his debut album “Inspirasyon, distributed by Ivory Records.

Mendrez also expressed gratitude to Star Music for supporting his original songs , including “Nandito Lang Ako” and his hit “Ngayong Pasko’y Ikaw Pa Rin,” both written by Jonathan Manalo.

“Yakap,” arranged by Tommy Katigbak produced by Jonathan Manalo and released under Star Music, is now available on all major digital streaming platforms.

Beyond music, Mendrez remains active on social media, where he is affectionately known as “Super Jojo” for his generosity and consistent efforts to share blessings with fans and followers.
