Masculados mark 23 years with ‘Saging,’ return to Universal Records

After more than two decades in the music industry, the Masculados believe that staying together has been less about avoiding conflicts and more about knowing how to work through them.

The six-member group—Enrico Mofar, Robin Robel, Nico Cordova, Orlando Sol, David Karell, and Richard “Chard” Yumul—opened up about their 23-year journey during the September 4 media launch of their newest single, “Saging,” which was also released on music streaming platforms that day.

For Orlando Sol, disagreements and misunderstandings are inevitable when members spend years working closely together. What matters, he said, is choosing to understand one another and remaining humble.

“Laging intact yung grupo at siyempre, hindi naman natin maiiwasan nagkakaroon ng problema, misunderstand, pero kailangan talaga magpakumbaba at iniintindi ang bawat isa.”

(The group has always remained intact, and of course, we can’t avoid having problems and misunderstandings, but we really need to remain humble and understand each other.)

Enrico Mofar quickly summed up the length of their journey, pointing to the group’s 23 years together: “Kaya kami tumagal nang gano’n: 23 years.” (That’s why we’ve lasted this long: 23 years.)

The group has gone through several lineup changes since its formation. Mofar and Robel were among the original members during its formation who chose to continue the Masculados name after other members left, with Nico Cordoval, Orlando Sol, David Karella, and Richard “Chard” Yumul later becoming part of the lineup. The group continued performing in the Philippines and abroad.

A new song after 23 years

Now, the Masculados are adding another release to their catalog with “Saging,” a playful track that leans into the group’s familiar brand of novelty music while giving it a more contemporary musical treatment.

The song marks their latest step following their renewed partnership with Universal Records, the label that played an important role in the group’s early career.

Their return to Universal Records follows the release of a new version of their well-known hit “Jumbo Hotdog,” which received a Budots treatment from Davao-based DJ Love.

Still bringing the humor

With “Saging,” the group once again plays to the cheeky humor that has been part of the Masculados identity since their early hits.

The title itself invites a playful interpretation, while the song centers on the familiar Filipino fruit and its many possible double meanings. The official music video was likewise released alongside the single on September 4.

But beneath the novelty and humor, the new release represents something more significant for the members: a chance to continue making music together after 23 years.

Rather than simply relying on nostalgia, the group is introducing its signature sound and performance style to a new generation while maintaining the personality that longtime fans have come to associate with Masculados.

More music ahead

The release of “Saging” also opens the door for more projects from the group as they continue this latest chapter with Universal Records.

For a group that has remained together for more than two decades, the members’ message during the media launch was clear: longevity is not simply about staying in the spotlight. It is also about maintaining the relationship among the members and choosing to keep moving forward together.
