Cycling activity in Marikina City has climbed sharply, with the number of cyclists recorded this year increasing by 157 percent from 11,363 in 2025 to 29,245, based on the latest Bike Count conducted by the Marikina City Bikeways Office.
The annual Bike Count is designed to measure cycling activity and collect data that can guide improvements to the city’s active mobility network. The latest figures show an increase of 17,882 cyclists within a year.
The Marikina City Bikeways Office also logged 67,428 cyclists during a broader seven-day monitoring period, highlighting the growing use of bicycles for mobility as the local government continues efforts to make transportation safer and more accessible.
“Ang mga numerong ito ay positibong indikasyon na nagbubunga ang ating mga pagkilos at mga programa na nagsusulong ng mas ligtas at mayors na pagbibisikleta,” Mayor Maan Teodoro said.
(These numbers are a positive indication that our actions and programs promoting safer and better cycling are yielding results.)
“Asahan na ng mga Marikeño na lalo pa nating pagtitibayin ang mga programa at pasilidad para sa mas ligtas at maayos na pagbibisikleta sa ating lungsod,” she added.
(Marikeños can expect us to further strengthen our programs and facilities for safer and more orderly cycling in our city.)
Under Teodoro’s watch, the Marikina Bikeways Office regularly cleans and maintains bike lanes, removing leaves, moss, and other obstructions to help keep cycling routes safe and comfortable.
The local government is also constructing the Marikina Active Transport Park in Barangay Marikina Heights, which will feature dedicated spaces for bicycles and BMX bikes, skateboards, roller skates, rollerblades, and non-motorized scooters.
The facility will also serve as an end-of-trip facility for bikers, with restrooms and designated areas for stalls, as well as spaces for various activities.
The local government is also installing bike racks in schools to provide organized and accessible parking for students who ride bicycles to school.
