Internet personality and content creator Viy Cortez, together with her husband Cong TV (Lincoln Cortez Velasquez), believes Filipino households should not always rely on air conditioning, sharing how her family maximizes natural ventilation and practices simple energy-saving habits at home.
“Hindi dapat laging naka-aircon (The air conditioning shouldn’t always be on),” Viy told CinemaBravo during the press conference for her and husband’s launch as brand ambassadors of MARSTEK Philippines on October 14 in a hotel in Pasig City.
We asked the power couple about the simple steps they take to conserve energy beyond promoting the brand’s products. Viy and Cong shared how their home’s design and everyday routines help them manage their electricity consumption.
Maximizing natural ventilation and daylight
Viy explained that their home was intentionally designed to allow air to flow through its spaces, reducing their dependence on air conditioning. The couple also want their children to avoid becoming accustomed to having the air conditioning on all the time.
Cong echoed this approach, pointing to their home’s ventilation and glass-walled living room, which allows natural light to illuminate the space during the day.
“Imbis na magbukas kami ng ilaw, ginagamit na lang namin yung araw,” he said. (“Instead of turning on the lights, we just make use of daylight.”)
When the weather gets too hot, Cong said they can simply draw the curtains to manage the heat while making the most of natural light.
Choosing energy-efficient appliances
Beyond their home’s design, Cong said they also consider energy efficiency when purchasing appliances, including looking for inverter technology and other options that can help reduce electricity consumption.
