Can this troll be the leading cause of death worldwide?

For sure, you’ve lost a relative to this. If not a relative, a friend. Or a friend of a friend. And if you’re not careful, you could be next.

That’s how widespread cardio-vascular disease has become. It’s the leading cause of death worldwide, after all. According to the World Health Organization, it’s responsible for as many as one-third of global deaths.

The most dreaded example of this is heart attack. Stroke and peripheral artery disease are among its more common forms.

It may be serious, but it’s not sudden; you don’t get cardiovascular disease in an instant. One acquires it over time. It starts with cholesterol plaque build-up. And when it’s begun to get in the way of oxygen-rich blood, you’ve developed a condition called atherosclerosis.

The name sounds complicated, doesn’t it? How can you prepare for or guard against an illness you can neither pronounce nor remember?

That’s why Asian Hospital and Medical Center came up with a nickname for it.

Meet Ate Rose. If you say “atherosclerosis” slowly – athe-ros-clerosis – you’ll understand why that is its nickname. If you don’t want to get cardiovascular disease, that’s what you should look out for.

Ate Rose.

An illness that trolls you

Since Asian Hospital already gave it a nickname, they might as well build a character out of it.

Asian Hospital created a mascot not just with a caustic personality – naughty, aggressive, and loves to meddle – but with its own social media account.

In short: they made a troll out of an illness.

Asian Hospital did so to spread awareness about atherosclerosis because of the gravity of its consequences. When you’re aware of it, only then can you avoid or get treated for it.

To gain public attention, Ate Rose has been trolling well-known online influencers with her Facebook account since early 2025.

She started with Kuya Kim Atienza, and has now included Krizzle Luna, Markybap, and Via Austria in her growing list of targets. When she wasn’t insulting them in comment threads, she left casual remarks that gave the false impression she was friends with them. She even had the gall to tag them in her own posts!

Curious onlookers wondering who Ate Rose was were led to a page on Asian Hospital’s website. This explained Ate Rose’s true identity – that she’s a serious illness with potentially fatal consequences.

Defeat Ate Rose, defeat atherosclerosis

Awareness of Ate Rose is one thing; defeating her is another.

That’s why Asian Hospital launched the Ate Rose Card. It’s a package of services – mainly check-ups and diagnostic procedures – to make the detection of atherosclerosis more affordable.

In case you’re diagnosed that you have it, the Ate Rose Card also comes with big discounts for procedures that have to do with treatment and getting well.

Asian Hospital and Medical Center is a world-class facility – not just because of its high-tech equipment, but because of the quality of care given by its doctors, medical personnel, and even non-medical staff.

Asian Hospital’s website also contains details about them. If Ate Rose has ever crossed your social media newsfeed, it should be easy to click or tap the link that leads you there.

More efforts, more chances of winning

Alongside Ate Rose’s webpage and Facebook account, Asian Hospital also conducted caravans on-ground where they toured the mascot so more people could learn about her.

She went around schools, workplaces, and barangays with Yosi Kadiri, the classic face of the Department of Health’s anti-smoking campaign. The tie-up emerged from the fact that smoking increased one’s chances of acquiring atherosclerosis.

Ate Rose also appeared as a guest on a podcast. She was part of an episode of

“Truth Be Told: Debunking Health Myths on Atherosclerosis” hosted by actress Amy Perez, and was joined by Dr. Marc Louie Del Rosario, an esteemed cardiologist from Asian Hospital. Together, they explained what atherosclerosis is and how it can be avoided or beaten.

Beyond these appearances, keep an eye out for Ate Rose as she takes part in more activities. For updates and further details, visit the Rockwell Run Club’s official Facebook page.

You can expect Ate Rose to make more appearances in the future – in your newsfeed, at your workplace, hopefully not in your arteries. The more you know about her, the higher your chances of defeating atherosclerosis. [PR]
