This X-Men saga comes to a close in ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’

The culmination of a superhero saga nearly two decades in the making is upon us when 20th Century Fox’s take on Marvel’s “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” opens in Philippine cinemas on June 5.

The spectacular new blockbuster is part science-fiction thriller, part character-driven drama, posing intriguing questions about identity and destiny. The emotional story of a divided hero, a divided family and a divided world, “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp and Jessica Chastain. The film was written and directed by Simon Kinberg and produced by Simon Kinberg, Hutch Parker, Lauren Shuler Donner and Todd Hallowell.

It’s the question at the heart of one of the most enduring storylines in the decades-long history of the X-Men comic books, the Dark Phoenix saga. Written by industry legend Chris Claremont and illustrated by artist John Byrne in 1980, the story in many ways represents the ultimate X-Men tale: Jean Grey (Turner) is transformed into a force that not even her mutant family can comprehend. She becomes an outsider among outsiders, a being beyond the reach of even those closest to her.

“The Dark Phoenix saga is one of the most beloved of the X-Men series in its long lineage, primarily because it’s not a story where you have heroes and villains, black and white,” says Simon Kinberg.

At its core, this is a tale of a woman struggling with her personal demons, and only the love of her family—the X-Men—can save her soul, and the world. “This movie’s very different from the previous X-Men movies,” Kinberg says. “The source material is different from the other X-Men comics that we’ve drawn upon in the past. It’s more psychologically complex and emotionally volatile. The emotions it gets into are rawer than a lot of the other X-Men comics.”

It’s a fitting conclusion to the X-Men franchise’s remarkable 18-year run. With X-Men: Dark Phoenix serving as the culmination of the saga after an impressive 12 films, producer Hutch Parker, who was there at the inception of 2000’s X-Men, says the experience of bringing the franchise full circle feels bittersweet.

“What we were able to do with the first film was introduce a tone that would have seemed, I think to most eyes, impossible in association with what we knew comic book movies to be at that time,” Parker says. “It was a game-changer in my opinion. Since then, comic-book films have become such an exciting and fertile platform. I feel like we’re only beginning to see the diversity of storytelling that’s possible within these worlds and with these characters. I’m grateful to have been a part of it, but I’m also aware that it will continue on long after all of us have moved on.”

From 20th Century Fox, “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” opens in PH cinemas nationwide on June 5.

About Brightburn: Son of Evil

What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister?

After a difficult struggle with fertility, Tori Breyer’s (Elizabeth Banks) dreams of motherhood come true with the arrival of a mysterious baby boy. Brandon appears to be everything Tori and her husband Kyle (David Denman) ever wanted—bright, talented, curious about the world. But as Brandon (Jackson A. Dunn) nears puberty, a powerful darkness manifests within him, and Tori becomes consumed by terrible doubts about her son. Once Brandon begins to act on his twisted urges, those closest to him find themselves in grave danger, as the miracle child transforms into a vicious predator unleashed on a sleepy Kansas town.

Dunn (Shameless), Matt Jones (Mom, NCIS) and Meredith Hagner (Younger). The film is directed by David Yarovesky (The Hive) and written by Brian Gunn & Mark Gunn (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island).

‘Avengers: Endgame’ earns P205-M on its first day; now the highest-grossing opening in PH cinema

WATCH: Final trailer reveal for ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’

With Jean Grey aka Phoenix (played by Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner) out of control in the final trailer reveal of “X-Men: Dark Phoenix”, her fellow mutants unite to save her from wreaking havoc on earth and to the rest of the X-men force.

“X-Men: Dark Phoenix” is adapted from the classic storyline during the 1980s when the X-men were on a rescue mission in space and when Jean was struck by a powerful solar flare and returned to earth unknowingly transformed into the most dangerous lethal weapon.  Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

““X-Men: Dark Phoenix” also stars Michael Fassbender as Magneto, James McAvoy as Professor X, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Evan Peters as Quicksilver, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Andrew Stehlin as Red Lotus, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler and Kota Eberhardt as Selene with Jessica Chastain in a mysterious role.

“X-Men: Dark Phoenix” opens in Philippine cinemas on June 5 from 20th Century Fox.

‘IT’ standout Jack Dylan Grazer is fanboy Freddy in ‘Shazam!’

Popularly known for starring as the Losers Club’s asthma-afflicted Eddie in the global horror blockbuster “IT,” Jack Dylan Grazer now stars in New Line Cinema’s action-adventure “SHAZAM!” in the role of Freddy, a geeky foster kid who has had a tough young life but who definitely hasn’t lost his sense of humor…or mischief.

In the film, superhero enthusiast Freddy helps out his bunkmate, Billy (Asher Angel) who’s freaked out by what’s just happened and who—or what—he’s become.  By shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—Billy can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam, courtesy of an ancient wizard.

If anyone can figure out this superhero thing, it’s the superhero super nerd, Freddy.  Director David F. Sandberg feels a lot of the funniest moments in the movie come from our superhero just hanging out with the ultimate fanboy.  “Freddy is just the expert that Shazam needs.”

“Freddy lives at the foster home, and he lives with a disability that has to do with his leg and his spine and his foot, so he walks with a crutch.  He gets bullied for it, but he doesn’t really let it affect him.  He lets it roll off his back and, rather than feeling sorry for himself, he laughs about it and makes fun of himself.  He’s confident, which I really admire.”

Freddy may exhibit a fair amount of bravado, but he’s not invulnerable…he just hides it well.  What he doesn’t attempt to hide is his collection of superhero memorabilia or the fact that, as Grazer notes, “He’s a total superhero fanatic, like extraordinaire.  He knows everything.  So, when he finds out that Billy is a superhero, it blows his mind.  This is a dream come true.  At first, I don’t think it even crosses his mind to think, ‘I wish I could be in his shoes.’  I think he’s just so caught up in being in the presence of a real superhero.  And he knows exactly what to do.”

“Freddy has to act as Shazam’s how-to manual,” Sandberg offers.  “He immediately knows what to test for: super strength, invisibility, super speed, and so on.  So, we get to see the two of them having a lot of fun with that but also really discovering the abilities Shazam has.  Of course, because they’re kids, they’re going to film it and put it on YouTube.”

Grazer says he found the story “empowering, because usually it’s grownup superheroes fighting crime or bad guys.  But this time it’s a kid; at least on the inside he’s still a kid.  And he’s scared, but he still wants to help save the day.  And Freddy is another kid who, by being friends with Billy, gets to help in his own way.”

Zachary Levi (Shazam) and Grazer spend the better part of the movie together.  “Jack was awesome, the dynamic was great,” he says.  “And I think story-wise, their friendship really helps to sell the idea of an adult who’s a kid on the inside, because if you don’t have that other kid to bounce back and forth with, you’d just have an adult pretending to be a kid in a bubble.  You need that exchange to make it work.”

When Freddy isn’t mentoring/managing Shazam, he’s often with the hero’s true self, Billy.  The relationship between those characters, though at first a prickly one, was equally important to conveying the story.  Just as they both did with Levi, Angel and Grazer hit if off right away.  “Jack was exactly how I imagined Freddy,” Angel states.  “He’s such a cool guy and loves what he does, and I knew he would be perfect and that we’d have a lot of fun.”

“Freddy is really the proxy for the superhero fans in the audience,” Sandberg says.  “And the way Jack plays him—this fast-talking, funny kid who walks with a crutch and seems to be as far from a superhero as you can be—just proves what I like about this movie: that everyone can be a hero.”

Now showing in Philippine cinemas, “Shazam!” is a New Line Cinema production, and distributed by Warner Bros., a WarnerMedia Company.  #SHAZAM

About “Shazam!”

David F. Sandberg (“Annabelle: Creation”) directs New Line Cinema’s “Shazam!,” the origin story that stars Zachary Levi (TV’s “Chuck”) as the titular DC Super Hero, along with Asher Angel (TV’s “Andi Mack”) as Billy Batson, and Mark Strong (the “Kingsman” movies) in the role of Super-Villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. Peter Safran (upcoming “Aquaman,” “The Conjuring” and “Annabelle” films) serves as the film’s producer.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard.  Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them!  Can he fly?  Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

“Shazam!” also stars Jack Dylan Grazer (“IT”) as Billy’s best friend and ultimate superhero enthusiast, Freddy, part of the foster family that includes Mary, played by Grace Fulton (“Annabelle: Creation”); Darla, played by Faithe Herman (TV’s “This is Us”); Eugene, played by Ian Chen (TV’s “Fresh Off the Boat”); and Pedro, played by Jovan Armand (TV’s “Hawaii Five-O”).  Cooper Andrews (TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and Marta Milans (TV’s “Killer Women”) play foster parents Victor and Rosa Vasquez, with Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou (“Blood Diamond”) as the Wizard.

‘Shazam’ grosses P79.6-M in 5 days, tops PH box-office at no.1

The country’s fanboys and moviegoers shouted the magic word “Shazam!” last weekend, catapulting Warner Bros.’ latest DC superhero to the top of the Philippine box-office at No.1.

The comedy adventure starring Zachary Levi as the titular hero arrived with a five-day opening weekend of P79.6-million, dominating with more than 50% market share and gave Warner Bros. Pictures its biggest opening for the year.

A hit with both fans and critics for its high entertainment value and joyful, comedic tone, “Shazam!” also gifted director David F. Sandberg his best opening ever locally, soaring past such blockbusters as 2016’s “Lights Out” and 2017’s “Annabelle: Creation.”

In the US and international markets, “Shazam!” dominated as well with a global start of $158.6 million.

Now playing in Philippine cinemas nationwide, “Shazam!” is a New Line Cinema production, and  distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros., a WarnerMedia Company.  #SHAZAM
