‘The Nun 2’ review: Bigger, better, scarier as it breaks ‘The Conjuring’ formula

The Nun II truly brings out the greatest evil in the entire Conjuring Universe. Set in 1956 France, when a priest is murdered and it appears that an evil force is spreading, Sister Irene is once again forced to come face to face with Valak and its demonic forces.

This sequel film is bigger, better, and scarier than its predecessors, standing out and potentially breaking The Conjuring formula. Both the story and the cast are solid, with visuals that are darker and moodier. It offers some great scares we haven’t seen before from previous films. Valak’s appearances alone are enough to put anyone in a state of unease, and the use of unsuspecting jump scares creates some heart-pounding moments that’ll put you at the edge of your seat. The art of not knowing is still part of the thrill. Plus, Valak isn’t the only evil entity our leads are going up against so the audience keeps on creating bouts of anxiety as one waits for who, or rather, what will pop out in the shadows. The filmmakers put significant effort into the sound, lighting, and pacing that adds more fear tactics.
