Scene Change is bringing back Dagitab this September 2025 with a two-weekend limited engagement, following its highly successful debut earlier this year. Adapted and directed by Palanca Hall of Famer Guelan Varela-Luarca from Giancarlo Abrahan’s award-winning Cinemalaya film, the play initially ran in July with tickets completely sold out even before opening night.
After its early closure in the first staging, the production now moves to a larger venue—the Power Mac Center Spotlight Blackbox Theater in Circuit Makati. With a capacity of 200 seats per performance, only six shows are scheduled for this rerun.
Cinematic roots, acclaimed achievements
The original film version of Dagitab premiered at the 10th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, where Giancarlo Abrahan received the awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay. The Young Critics Circle also hailed it as the Best Debut Feature of 2014. That same year, the Society of Filipino Film Reviewers (formerly Pinoy Rebyu) ranked it as the year’s Best Film while also honoring it with wins for Best Performance, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Scene.
The film earned 14 Gawad Urian nominations, was shortlisted for Best Screenplay at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, and secured top spots in critics’ polls—cementing its place as one of the most celebrated Filipino films of its time.
Story, characters, creative team
At its core, Dagitab explores the disintegrating marriage of professors Issey and Jimmy, who have been together for over two decades. Jimmy becomes consumed with his research on a deity he believes is the spirit of a deceased friend, while Issey is drawn toward her godson Gab, a young writer whose sensitivity leads to an unexpected relationship.
The rerun brings back the original cast:
- Agot Isidro as Issey
- Jojit Lorenzo as Jimmy
- Elijah Canlas as Gab, the godson and eventual lover of Issey
- Benedix Ramos as Angelo, a poet who builds a strong friendship with Gab
- Sam Samarita as Lorena, a haunting figure from the past
The production is helmed by Guelan Varela-Luarca with the support of an accomplished creative team:
- D Cortezano – Set Design
- JM Cabling – Movement
- Jethro Nibaten – Lighting
- Carlos Hombrebueno – Sound
- Giancarlo Abrahan – Dramaturgy
